How old is a domain? Most domain age checkers answer with the WHOIS creation date. That date starts over whenever a domain drops and someone registers it again, so a name first registered years ago can look brand new.

The new [Domain age checker](https://instantdomainsearch.com/domain-age-checker) shows two ages side by side: the WHOIS creation date of the current registration, and the day the daily zone files that registries publish first show the name registered. They go back to May 2016.

## Two dates, side by side

Type a domain into the box and press Enter. The checker shows:

- **WHOIS creation date** is when the current registration began, and how long ago that was.
- **First seen registered** is the first day the zone files show the name, or **2016 or earlier** if it was already in the first snapshot.
- **A timeline** of when the name was taken, available or listed for sale, from the same zone-file history as the Domain history card, followed by the dates it expired and was registered again.

Take [noshgarden.com](https://instantdomainsearch.com/domain-age-checker?q=noshgarden.com). WHOIS says it was created in 2025, but the zone files first show it registered on Jan 13, 2017. It left the zone on Feb 24, 2020 and was registered again in 2025.

## A Domain age card in Research

[Research](https://instantdomainsearch.com/research?q=noshgarden.com) gets a **Domain age** card under the history card. It shows up for a taken name whose zone files show a drop before its WHOIS creation date, with the first-seen age next to the WHOIS age and a link to the checker.

## Try it

Open the [Domain age checker](https://instantdomainsearch.com/domain-age-checker) and enter any domain. It’s free, with no account and no email. Extensions without public zone files, such as .io, show the WHOIS age only.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is the WHOIS creation date newer than the first-seen date?

Deleting a domain and registering it again gives it a new creation date. The zone files still show the earlier registration, so the first-seen date is older.

### What does “2016 or earlier” mean?

The name was already in the first zone-file snapshot, on May 31, 2016, so it was registered on that day or before it.

### Where does the history come from?

From the daily zone files that registries publish, going back to May 2016. Short gaps of less than 35 days, such as registrar holds, are not counted as expirations.
