Which names are people registering right now, and which domain extensions are actually growing? Answering that used to mean piecing together registry reports and blog posts that go stale the week they’re published.

The new [Domain trends](https://instantdomainsearch.com/trends) page answers it from the zone files that registries publish every day. It shows how many domains exist, the names registered in the most extensions, and a map of every large extension’s 30-day change. The homepage has a new **Trending domain names** board too, with the top six names of the last 7 days.

## Trending domain names

The **Trending domain names** table ranks names by how many domain extensions they were newly registered in. Pick **3 days**, **7 days**, **30 days** or **90 days**. 7 days is the default, and each period lists its top eight names.

- **Last 30 days** is a small line of the name’s running total of new domains, with the selected period in green.
- **New domains** is the count for the period, with its change on the period before, or a **New** badge.
- **Taken extensions** is how many extensions the name is currently registered in.

Hover, focus or tap a count to see the days behind it: the count for the period before, a larger running-total line, the busiest day and the extensions the name is new in. In the 7 days to Oct 25, 2026, **aitransformation** led with 56 new domains. Every name opens the [domain generator](https://instantdomainsearch.com/domain-generator?q=aitransformation) with that word, since the exact name is usually taken.

A **How we pick these** note explains what’s left out: names with digits, gambling, adult and piracy terms, brands, and strings that aren’t English words. Spellings of the same word are grouped under one name.

## Registered domains since 2016

At the top of the page, the headline counts every domain in an extension with a public zone file: **258,763,426** across **953 extensions**, as of Oct 20, 2026.

Under it, a chart plots registered domains by month since May 2016. It covers the 14 largest extensions with a zone file for every month, such as .com, .net, .org and .info. The 14 together hold 207,900,461 of the 258,763,426 domains. A missing month shows as a gap, never an estimate, and **Every month as a table** opens the whole series.

## Every large extension on one map

The **Domain extensions** map shows all 241 extensions with 10,000 or more domains in their zone file. Each tile is sized by its domains and colored by its 30-day change: green grew, red shrank, and deeper means a larger change.

Hover or focus a tile to see its domains, net change and percentage, and click it to open that extension’s page or its chart on [Domain name statistics](https://instantdomainsearch.com/domain-extensions/statistics). Over Sep 20 – Oct 20, 2026, **.baby** grew fastest at +77.0% and **.skin** shrank most at -34.2%. On a phone, the largest extensions get their own tile and one tile holds the rest.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where do these numbers come from?

Every count comes from the daily zone files that registries publish. A domain is counted when it appears in its extension’s zone file.

### What does “registered in the most extensions” mean?

We count new domains by their exact name in every extension with a public zone file. If the exact name beans was newly registered in 19 extensions in the last 7 days, it shows 19 new domains for that period.

### Why are .ai and .io missing?

Their registries, like most country-code registries, don’t publish public zone files, so Domain trends only includes extensions where every domain can be counted directly.
