What is a .dev domain?
A .dev domain is a generic top-level domain for developers and technology, operated by Google Registry and open to the public since February 2019. Like .app, the whole extension is on the HSTS preload list, so every .dev site must serve HTTPS. Google (web.dev) and GitHub (github.dev) use it for developer-facing properties, and it suits documentation, tools, and open-source projects.

Why choose a .dev domain?
A .dev domain tells visitors your site is built by and for developers. Like .app, every .dev domain requires HTTPS—enforced at the browser level via HSTS preloading. Google operates the registry, and major companies like Google (web.dev) and GitHub (github.dev) use it for developer-facing properties. If you’re shipping documentation, developer tools, or open-source projects, .dev is purpose-built.
Best for:
Developer signal - Instantly communicates a technical, developer-focused audience
HTTPS required - Every .dev domain must use HTTPS, enforced via HSTS preloading
Google-backed - Operated by Google Registry with enterprise-grade infrastructure
Clean namespace - Newer TLD means short, brandable names are still available

The .dev extension is a generic top-level domain operated by Google Registry, launched in February 2019. It’s designed for developers and technology—documentation sites, developer tools, portfolios, and open-source projects. Google uses it for web.dev, and GitHub launched github.dev as a browser-based code editor.
Like .app, Google added .dev to the HSTS preload list. This means browsers will only connect to .dev sites via HTTPS—there’s no way to serve a .dev site over unencrypted HTTP. It’s a security feature enforced at the browser level, not something you configure.
Google Registry operates .dev. They won the TLD through ICANN’s 2012 new gTLD program. Google also operates .app, .page, .how, and several other TLDs. The shared infrastructure means .dev benefits from the same reliability and security as Google’s other TLD properties.
.io has broader tech/startup connotations and a longer track record. .dev is more narrowly focused on the developer audience specifically. Both are popular choices, but .dev has the advantage of mandatory HTTPS and a clearer “developer” signal. If your audience is exclusively developers, .dev is more precise.
Technically yes—there are no content restrictions. But visitor expectations matter. Someone clicking a .dev domain expects developer content, tools, or documentation. Using it for a restaurant or retail business would be confusing.
Google treats all TLDs equally for search ranking—.dev has no inherent SEO advantage or disadvantage versus .com. The mandatory HTTPS is a minor positive signal since Google prefers secure sites, but the impact is negligible compared to content quality and site authority.
